GREED

Greed is grasping, craving, covetous, desirous, devouring, exploitative, extortionate, gluttonous, hoggish, indulgent, mercenary, miserly, piggish, and voracious. Greed accumulates, far beyond need. Greed is self-centered and selfish. It lives at the opposite end of the spectrum from generosity, giving, and graciousness.

WHAT WILL GREED DO TO US?

Proverbs 21:25-26 . . . They are always greedy for more, while the godly love to give!

Isaiah 56:11 . . . They are as greedy as dogs, never satisfied . . . all of them intent on personal gain.

Greed makes us ignorant of others’ needs and causes us to think only of ourselves.

Exodus 20:17 . . . Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife.

Envy, or coveting, is a form of greed. Greed can overpower us, moving us to go after things we know we should not have.

1 Corinthians 5:11 . . . You are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a Christian yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy.

In this passage God ranks greed with some of the worst kinds of sin.

2 Chronicles 10:1-19 . . . The king paid no attention to the people’s demands.

Motivated by greed, Rehoboam pressed too hard and divided his kingdom. Those who insist on having it all often wind up with little or nothing.

Proverbs 11:24 . . . Those who are stingy will lose everything.

The more you accumulate, the greater your chance of losing everything.

PROMISE FROM GOD:

Matthew 6:19-21 . . . Don’t store up treasures here on earth. . . . store your treasures in heaven. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be.
